Tree preservation

Although redevelopment provides the opportunity for new tree planting, there is a steady loss of older trees. The Town and Country Planning Acts allow local councils to protect visually important trees by making them subject to a Tree Preservation Order(TPO). Over 3000 trees in Portsmouth are protected in this way.

If you have a tree in your garden it is advisable to contact the council to enquire if a tree preservation order has been imposed upon it prior to removal. Those persons found guilty of causing or carrying out unauthorised works to a TPO or conservation area tree could be liable to prosecution and heavy fines.
