Composting

photo of lady digging out compost from bin For Portsmouth residents lucky enough to have a garden, home composting is a great way to get the most from your waste. Most organic or garden waste can be composted using a traditional heap or purpose made bin, to produce a rich, organic compost. Spread a few shovels of this around your flowerbeds and your garden will never look healthier.

There are big benefits to composting your garden waste at home:

  • It deals with the waste at the place where it’s produced and so avoids vehicle movements and associated pollution.
  • It will considerably reduce the amount of waste we have to collect and dispose of  at a landfill site or at an incinerator - we estimate about 3000 tonne every year. This will be much better for the environment and will save the council money too.
  • It will boost our recycling rate (by virtue of reducing the amount of waste that is landfilled or incinerated) and help us on the way to meeting our 30% target set by the government.

If you can't compost at home, don’t panic!

You can take your garden waste to the Household Waste Recycling Centre and pick up a bag of ProGrow, the Soil Association certified compost that we make from it!

ProGrow is priced at £2.30 for a 30 litre sack to cover processing costs.

Larger volumes of ProGrow can be purchased from the Down End Composting Facility, off the A27 near Fareham. Contact the site on 01962 764027 for further information.
