Big Screen

In 2008, Portsmouth was chosen as one of eight cities to host a Big Screen by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). The Portsmouth screen was the first installed on the south coast and forms part of the UK’s largest network of screens known as London 2012 Live Sites.

At present there are 22 Big Screens across the UK with more being planned in the lead up to London 2012 including temporary screens. As part of the Cultural Olympiad the Big Screen represents a major legacy from London 2012 because they are planned to operate not just for the years leading up to 2012, but for many years afterwards.

The Big Screen is great opportunity for the local community, the public and the creative community of Portsmouth, as a focus for live events as well as a place for films, animations, digital art, photographs and interactive games to get a proper public viewing.

Our aim is to encourage members from the local community to get involved and support the Big Screen as much as possible. The formation of the Big Screen Steering Group enables us to discuss projects and engage further with the local community.

London 2012 Live Site

In 2012, the Big Screen will be a ‘Live Site of the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ and Portsmouth will be a ‘London 2012 Live Site City’ for the Games. The Big Screen will be the place to experience the excitement of the London 2012 Games featuring a package of exclusive and localised coverage, competitions and live events. If you didn’t manage to get a ticket for the Games – then make sure you come to the Big Screen to watch all the action live as it happens.

The Big Screens are therefore a key part of the London 2012 Games, bringing a piece of Olympic space into the heart of local communities across the UK and encouraging participation in sports and cultural activities.
