Deprivation
Last updated: 10 November 2011 10:26The Indices of Multiple Deprivation provide a relative ranking of areas across England according to their level of deprivation.
Multiple deprivation is made up of the following separate dimensions, or 'domains' of deprivation and is available for Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs):
- Income deprivation
- Employment deprivation
- Health deprivation and disability
- Education, skills and training deprivation
- Barriers to housing and services
- Living environment deprivation
- Crime
Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOAs) are small areas with an average population of about 1,500 residents. In Portsmouth there are 123 LSOAs but only 14 wards. (In England there are 32,482 LSOAs and around 8,500 wards). This means we can identify pockets of deprivation - a feature of urban areas - which may be overlooked when using ward level data.
The relationship of LSOAs to wards and the LSOA codes in Portsmouth is shown here.
