Getting to the Games
Last updated: 15 September 2011 16:20 UKPortsmouth is located on the south coast of England and is very easy to get to whether you’re in the UK or arriving from abroad.
Located between the main venues in London and the sailing venues in Weymouth, Portsmouth is well situated for the 2012 Olympic Games.
London 2012 are "aiming for 100 per cent of spectators to get to the Games by public transport, cycling or on foot." With 7.7 million tickets available for the Olympics and 1.5 million for the Paralympics this will be a great achievement.
If you are planning to travel to the Games from Portsmouth the information below should help you to plan your journey. The city is also a gateway to the the south of England and continental Europe.
We have our own international ferry port (rebuilt in April 2011). Southampton airport is just 30 minutes along the M27 and the major London airports, Gatwick and Heathrow are just 60 miles (100km) from the city centre.
The city is just over 80 miles (135km) from London and the capital can be reached by train in 90 minutes.
Portsmouth to London
By car the trip from Portsmouth to London can take approximately 1 hour travelling via the dual carriageway A3M and through the Hindhead Tunnel.
Trains from Portsmouth to London run very frequently and the fast service from Portsmouth and Southsea Station to London Waterloo takes only 1½ hours.
Coaches run from Portsmouth to London and take from 2 hours 10 minutes.
The Greyhound runs from Portsmouth to London and can take from 1½ hours.
Portsmouth to Weymouth
By car the 84 mile trip from Portsmouth to Weymouth takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes via the M27, A31 and A35.
Trains from Portsmouth to Weymouth run frequently and take around 2½ hours.
Coaches run from Portsmouth to Weymouth and take 3½ hours.
