What happens to the waste from the Household Waste Recycling Centre

Glass being recycled Aluminium Cans
Delivered to companies who recycle aluminium cans, paperclips, scissors or bikes

Asbestos
Sent to a landfill site

Card
Also delivered to a recycling mill and generally used to make new boxes

CRTs / Television sets
These are recycled once the gases have been removed

Domestic Batteries
Household batteries are collected and transported to France where they have the facilities to recycle them

Engine Oil
Delivered to a company who can recycle and reuse the oil once they have treated it

Fluorescent Lights
The gas is removed allowing both the glass and metal to be recycled to create new fluorescent lights

Fridge / Freezers
Once the hazardous gases have been removed 90% of each fridge or freezer is recycled, the 10% that cannot be recycled is sent to landfill

Gas Bottles
Recycled and reused by the manufacturer

Glass
Sent to a recycling plant and used to create new bottles or jars, or as an aggregate that underlies new roads

Green Waste
Collected and sent to be composted into ‘pro-grow’

Hazardous Waste
Once treated, or neutralised and either used to create new chemicals or sent to landfill

Iron and Steel, Non Ferrous Metals and Car Batteries
Delivered to local scrap metal merchants who then send on to steelworks

Paint
Treated at a hazardous waste facility and then sent to a landfill site

Paper
Delivered to the recycling mill in Aylesford, and recycled into paper for newspapers

Rubble and Soil
Often used as a secondary aggregate

Textiles
Either sent on to charity shops, reused by homeless or sent to developing countries.  Or if they cannot be reused made into cleaning cloths, blankets, rugs, clothes or padding for cushions and furniture

Wood
Clean wood is chipped and used as a safety covering in playgrounds, as a decorative covering or as fuel
