Mountbatten Centre selected for Olympic training camp directory

The Mountbatten Centre and HMS Temeraire have been selected by LOCOG (London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) for inclusion in the official 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide.

The centre has been selected for the sports of athletics, swimming, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, trampoline and triathlon. HMS Temeraire has been selected as a suitable venue for athletics.

Released this summer, the Guide will promote facilities for the preparation of international athletes in the lead up to the London 2012 Games. Inclusion in the directory means that Portsmouth will have the chance to have not just one country but teams from several participating countries coming to Portsmouth to train. Local people and sports stars in the making will be able to watch them train, which will be a huge inspiration.

Paralympic training camps

The Mountbatten Centre has also been selected for inclusion in the Training Camp guide for the 2012 Paralympic Games, for four different sports; Boccia, Goalball, paralympic athletics and swimming.

Released this summer, the Guide will promote facilities for the preparation of international athletes in the lead up to the London 2012 Games.

Councillor Terry Hall, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure said: "It is fantastic news for Portsmouth to be selected as a potential training camp for both the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, our investment in top class sports facilities such as the Mountbatten Centre and the new Portsmouth Gymnastics Centre is really paying off."

"Increasing participation in sports from all sections of the community is really important and hopefully use of the Mountbatten Centre facilities by world class disabled athletes will inspire people to consider taking up sports locally."

The Mountbatten Centre has a long reputation for hosting a wide variety of national and international sporting events, including the Special Olympic National Games in 1997.
