Subject: Doing the right thing
Date: April 2008
Comment: Is it better to buy local food from down the road, organic food from Chile or Fairtrade food from Africa? I would like to do the right thing but it’s confusing!
Response: The answer is to choose food that you know has been grown in a sustainable way – so that could be any of the three you mentioned! You won’t be able to buy 100% of your food from local, sustainable sources. So the best you could do would be to choose a mixture of local, organic, Fairtrade and maybe home-grown produce. If your choice supports sustainability ‘somewhere’, it’s a good choice.
