Subject: Reducing global warming
Date: April 2008
Comment: It is a waste of time trying to reduce global warming by changing the way we live here when huge countries like India are starting to invest in fossil fuels. Any changes we make will be completely wiped out.
Matthew, Paulsgrove
Response: Climate change is a long-term global problem, so it needs long-term goals that involve everybody – there is no ‘us and them’ in this situation.
The fossil fuels that countries such as India are using will be replacing other environmentally damaging fuels such as kerosene and wood burning. So while it may sound like a backwards step, for those countries, it is a step forward to get out of poverty.
As most of the problem has been made by ‘developed’ countries, it is up to our countries to find alternative, clean energy solutions that can be shared with the rest of the world. Because we have the technology, the skills, the money and the incentive to do it – and right now, they don’t.
