On 18/04/2008 a woman from Portsmouth was successfully prosecuted by Portsmouth City Council and the Department for Work and Pensions on three charges under Section 111A(1A) of the Social Security Administration Act 1992. She had dishonestly failed to declare to both departments that she had a partner living with her, resulting in a Housing Benefit overpayment of £7065.15, a Council Tax Benefit overpayment of £1662.03, and Department for Work and Pensions overpayments totalling approximately £18000.00. She was sentenced to thirty-six weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years, 250 hours unpaid work, and ordered to pay £125.00 costs.
