John Pounds development
The John Pounds Centre is located on Queen Street in Portsea, Portsmouth and is named after a philanthropic eighteenth century Portsmouth cobbler.
The £7 million redevelopment scheme has created a comprehensive healthy living centre located in one of the most deprived wards in the south-east of England. Its aims to enhance the lives of local people by offering a range of facilities and activities.
It includes a library, area housing office, multi-purpose halls, café, creche, community offices, youth club, fitness suite and arts and craft studios in a complex which includes a new medical centre and private and affordable housing
The council initiated an area of co-ordination to support residents’ involvement in planning the area and encourage better inter-agency working which created an area action plan. The redevelopment has demonstrated the councils commitment to working with residents to bring about significant change. It has helped residents to develop confidence in their ability to engage with the council and other agencies to address issues which are important to them.
In 2006, the centre was the overall winner of the South East Regional Planning Awards, it won the regional RTPI Planning Awards in the category of Community Planning and it won the category of Community Benefit in the RICS Awards South East.
