Adult Social Care
what is social care?
At some point in our lives most of us will need help with everyday living, perhaps because of an illness, a stay in hospital, a disability, or just because we are getting older.
When we say ‘social care’ we are talking about a wide range of services offered by the council, independent providers and voluntary organisations that help those who need some extra support with their everyday living.
Our aim is to help people to continue to live independently in their own homes and as part of the community for as long as possible, because we know that is where most people want to be.
Click on Helping you to live independently to find out more about care in the home, day services, extra care and sheltered housing, community rehabilitation that can help people return home after a stay in hospital, adult placements, and occupational therapy.
Through adult social care, we support more than 6,000 people each year, assessing what kind of care they need and arranging the right services – whether it’s a temporary crisis or a longer lasting problem.
If you need support yourself, or you are looking for information for someone else, these pages should tell you everything you need to know. If you have any questions, you can call our adult social care helpdesk on 023 9289 3800 or use the contact us section to find the numbers for our specialist services.
who do we help?
We support vulnerable adults of all ages, from all communities. We help people with physical or learning disabilities, those with dementia and other problems associated with growing older, as well as those who have a loss of sight or hearing. Working with the NHS, we arrange support for people who have mental health problems and issues with substance misuse, and those with HIV/AIDS.
