Win up to £1,000 in our roundabout makeover competition
Last updated: 12 February 2010 12:36 UKIf you’ve got imagination and ideas, now’s your chance to help change the image of Portsmouth – and win up to £1,000.
We want to improve two landmarks – the Church Street (ABC) roundabout, at the bottom of Mile End Road, and the Commercial Road (Marketway) roundabout. We want them to present a better first image of Portsmouth to people entering the city.
We’re inviting anyone in Portsmouth to come up with a makeover design for one or both of these roundabouts. We’re after designs that are interesting, novel and distinctive, and which show Portsmouth has real civic pride.
Designs could include sculpture or other kinds of art, planting or landscaping. Your entry could include two designs – one for each roundabout. Or you could submit a design for one roundabout only.
The prize money available is £1,000, kindly donated by our highways contractor, Colas. If the two designs chosen come from separate entries, each entrant will win £500.
Entrants can be of any age. Students of the built environment and professionals in the field are particularly encouraged to enter, as are members of community groups, teachers and school pupils.
Team entries, including collaborations between professionals and non-professionals, are strongly encouraged.
You can see the location of the roundabouts in the document below, image © BLOM Pictometry 2008.
How to enter
Entries can be in any format, including scale drawings, other drawings, plans, sketches, models or computer-generated images. They can be sent in by email, as hard copies or on disc (with the drawings as PDFs).
They must be clear, well-annotated and accompanied by no more than 500 words outlining the rationale for the design. The position or shape of either roundabout must not be altered in any way by the design.
All entries must include a daytime phone number, your address and, if you have one, your email address.
Emails should be sent to roundabout.comp@portsmouthcc.gov.uk
Postal entries should be sent to:
Roundabout Competition, c/o Ben Cracknell, Planning Services
Civic Offices, Guildhall Square, Portsmouth PO1 2AU
Or you can hand your entry in at the Civic Offices front desk, marked for the attention of Ben Cracknell. The deadline for us to receive entries is 5pm on Friday 16 April 2010.
The winner may be required to take part in publicity for the competition. The competition is open to anyone who lives, works or studies in Portsmouth, except employees of the council or Colas.
Judging
Entries will be judged by a panel of representatives from:
- Portsmouth City Council
- Colas
- The University of Portsmouth
- Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust
Winners will be announced by no later than the end of May 2010.
What happens to the winning design?
We intend to implement the winning entry in part or in full, subject to technical and financial considerations. In the longer term these roundabouts may be subject to redevelopment. The design should therefore be seen as temporary.
