Dog kennel service
We provide a kennel service for lost or abandoned dogs within Portsmouth. The staff at the kennels, as well as looking after the needs of the dogs in our care, are avaliable to speak on dog welfare issues and to visit various schools and clubs providing information on dog welfare, control and fouling, and will offer advice on any dog-related issue.
Lost and found dogs
If you find a stray or have lost your dog, please contact us at the kennels. We are open between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 11.00am on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. You can also contact the Police Force Enquiry Centre, or our City Help Desk or Clean City service. Our staff will make every effort to contact an owner if the dog is micro-chipped or wearing a collar or tag. If the dog is not claimed after seven days it can legally be rehomed.
Keeping your dog safe
Sometimes healthy stray dogs cannot be reunited with their owners because there is no way of identifying them. In addition to a collar or tag, micro-chipping is another way of ensuring your pet is easily identified and can be returned to you safe and sound. In line with government initiatives, we promote micro-chipping and it helps keep dogs safe. Our staff are trained to micro-chip animals and this can be carried out by appointment.
Charges
We charge an initial £39 and then £14 each day for kennel fees for strays and this must be paid before dogs can be returned to their owners. To have your pet micro-chipped costs only £11.
Are dogs put to sleep?
Dogs will be kept until they are collected by their owners or are rehomed. They are only put to sleep on veterinary advice to relieve suffering. Every effort is made to either contact the owner or rehome the dog.
Rehoming stray dogs
We work with several agencies in an effort to rehome stray dogs. The RSPCA, Police and army sometimes take dogs as do the charities Guide Dogs for the Blind and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People when a dog is suitable. Dogs are also rehomed with members of the public if suitable homes are found and they meet the needs of the dog and the person wishing to offer a home.
Restrictions on where you can take you dog in Portsmouth
Dogs are banned from the beach, except east of the Royal Marine statue, during the summer from March 1 until September 30 and from Victoria Park in the city centre at all times. All dogs must be held on a lead if on a designated road and virtually all roads within Portsmouth are designated.
Dog fouling
Not only is dog mess unpleasant it can also be very dangerous, the faeces can contain the roundworm Toxocara Canis. It is your responsibility as a dog owner to clear up after your dog. Failing to clear up is an offence and you can be prosecuted or given a fixed penalty ticket, currently £50.
