St James' Hospital
This information sheet sets out the recent planning history of this complex site.St James’ Hospital is one of a number of psychiatric hospitals affected by National Health Service reforms. In particular the Government’s Strategy of “Care in the Community” is resulting in the gradual closure of the Hospital and development of new community based facilities to re-provide services.
The main building of St James’ Hospital is considered of sufficient quality to warrant protection. The extensive mature trees and areas of open space on the site form an integral part of the main building’s setting, and a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) was made in 1995 to protect the future of key trees on the site.
