Tesco, Southampton Road

This information sheet traces the development of the Tesco store in Southampton Road from allotments to its opening in August 2005.

The first shopping proposal was put forward on this former allotment site in 1987, when an application was refused planning permission for a 23,225 sq.m. shopping centre, multi-screen cinema & petrol filling station with associated parking. 

Several more applications were refused. Finally, an application for reserved matters for the construction of a 6503 sq.m. retail store, petrol filling station and access road with associated parking & landscaping (revised scheme relating to siting and landscaping only) was approved in October 1994.
