No 2 Tourism
In one way or another, tourism affects everyone; both directly and indirectly and with positive and negative impacts. Most people are tourists or travellers at some time - on holiday or business, from day trips to long holidays. Tourism can improve individuals' quality of life by providing new experiences as well as the more tangible benefits of providing employment and livelihood for millions of people. On the other hand, however, too many people in the same place at the same time, or the wrong sort of development in an inappropriate location, can bring problems of congestion and low environmental standards which can reflect poorly on the overall image of a town or city.
Since 1982, the city council has adopted a positive and successful policy of promoting tourism to assist in diversifying the economy of the city and create further employment opportunities. It has given greater purpose to maintaining historic buildings, improving infrastructure and the environment, maintaining and improving cultural activities and increasing the range of attractions and facilities available to local residents. This promotion has greatly enhanced Portsmouth's image and its ability to attract investment.
