No 3 Sustainable Development & Plan Appraisal

The most widely-used interpretation of the term 'sustainable development' is probably that defined within the Brundtland Report in 1987, which stated that:

"...humanity has the ability to make development sustainable - to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future gen-erations to meet their own needs ..."

This means that we should be seeking to improve the overall quality of life of people today (in terms of providing sufficient housing, employment and other facilities) without damaging the environment or wasting its limited resources, either of which could prevent our descendants from attaining a similar or im-proved quality of life to ours.

There is now a requirement to undertake an environmental appraisal of emerging development plans.  This requirement is described in more detail below (sections 3 and 5).
