No 6 The Environment & Quality of Life
"Cities are at the centre of a delicate equilibrium between population, resources and the environment ...... we have the opportunity to choose a different route for our towns and cities; to realise an urban vision founded on principles of design excellence, social well being and environmentalresponsibility ...".(Lord Rogers of Riverside, Urban Task Force Prospectus, July 1998)
The term 'environment' can be used to describe the world in which people live, work, play and socialise. The prevailing quality of any type of environment can have a major impact on how those who live within it feel and behave. The environment is made up of many different and varied elements. It comprises natural habitats, landscaped amenity and recreation areas, buildings and roads, trees, plants and animals, and the people who live within it. Each element, or a combination of any of them, can determine the quality an environment is deemed to have.
Portsmouth's physical environment is varied and complex. It is essentially urban. Portsmouth's social environment is equally varied.
