Rent - payments and help with paying

We set a rent for each property and there are a number of ways in which you can pay your rent. We will help tenants to claim any available assistance with paying their rent. When tenants are in arrears we will make agreements to reduce the arrears. However, we do take legal action if tenants persistently fail to pay their rent.

Paying your Rent

There are a number of ways to pay your rent.

At your area office you can pay by cash, cheque, debit or credit card or Maestro.

You can have a standing order set up so your rent is automatically paid each month.  Some of the features of this are:

• payments are made automatically and you will no longer have to remember to pay each month
• you can put behind you worry of overlooking a payment, perhaps due to illness or being on holiday
• we will update your standing order every year and inform you of any changes
• when a tenancy ends the standing order automatically ends
• we will update your standing order every year and inform you of any changes
• you will receive 14 days notification of any changes to your standing order to make sure it is correct

You can also pay by Giro payment at the Post Office, you will need to speak to your area office first to arrange this.  You can also pay over the telephone at your area office or by using the "Pay for it" link to the right.

Help with paying your rent

If you need help paying your rent you may be entitled to housing benefit and your housing officer can give you advice and assistance on paying your rent.

Repaying your rent

If you are in arrears we will try and reach a realistic agreement for you to repay the amount due over a period of time. We follow a legal procedure to recover arrears.
