Complaints about air pollution
We can investigate some complaints about air pollution.
Typically the following types of complaints can be investigated:
- smoke emitted from premises, including dark smoke
- fumes or gases emitted from premises
- dust, steam or effluvia from industrial, trade or business premises
- odour from industrial, trade or business premises
We have a range of powers under the Environmental Protection Act and the Clean Air Act to deal with these types of emissions where they are so significant or repetitive as to be prejudicial to health or have a deleterious material impact on a neighbouring premises. We can also deal with a wide range of complaints from certain prescribed industrial premises, which you can find on our Prescibed Processes page
The south western corner of Portsmouth has been declared as a Smoke Control Area. This limits the fuels that may be used in this area to smokeless fuels only except where approved combustion equipment is used. In all parts of the city, chimneys for larger industrial sites may need to be approved by us.
