Cyclist Information

A compact and generally flat city, Portsmouth is ideally suited to cycling.  Cycling levels in Portsmouth are higher than in many other cities in the UK, with 7.1% of city residents cycling to work according to the 2001 census.

The Road Safety Team provides various forms of support for cyclists in the city. Cycle proficiency courses are available to children aged 10 and over, volunteers can be trained to give cycle proficiency courses, plus we have a range of cycle products to help keep you safe whilst cycling around the city. Take a look at our hints and tips section - it has some useful advice for both cyclists and motorists.

The council has also provided a Cycle Map of the city which provides cyclists with details of the cycle routes in Portsmouth, as well as useful contact details for bicycle shops, some basic hints and tips for cycling and a reference for road signs for cyclists.

The Transport Policy Team is continually working to improve the cycling infrastructure, which includes cycle paths, security and reducing cycling casualties.
