Walk on Wednesday - 'WoW'
On Wednesday 9th November 2005 the Road Safety Team through the Safer Routes to School programme launched the Portsmouth Walk on Wednesday (WoW) scheme. The scheme was launched at St Swithun's Primary, school to national 'Walk on Wednesday' winner Ana Chapero-Hall who designed one of twelve national pin badges to represent the Living Streets scheme.
The WoW scheme follows on from the success of the Walk to School Week by encouraging more children and parents to walk to school on a regular basis throughout the entire year. An assembly launched the scheme in which pupils were informed that walking is good for health, the environment and can help to reduce traffic-related casualties by reducing the numbers of cars near school gates.
Furthermore pupils were advised about dressing for the weather be it wet, windy or dark with assistance from two pupils dressed in waterproofs, hat and gloves.
It is envisaged other schools will follow on from St Swithun's lead and promote walking through the WoW scheme.
