Grow Your Own Grub project
The 'Grow Your Own Grub' school's growing website has been put together by members of our Health Improvement & Development Service to provide help and advice for schools who want to run an outdoor food-growing project with links to healthy eating and healthy cooking.
The site provides a step by step guide on how to run a simple growing project at a very low cost from the planning stage through to practical gardening sessions.
A class of children participating in the project will be able to grow four different vegetables or fruits, from sowing seeds all the way through to harvesting the food they have grown and taking part in a taster session with their parents.
Schools vary greatly in their access to outdoor space – some may have quite large areas that can be used for food growing whilst others have no space at all. The Grow Your Own Grub project is designed to be accessible for schools no matter how limited their outdoor growing space. There are also several indoor growing activities for schools without any outdoor space.
