Booking a Bulky Waste Collection with the council

Portsmouth City Council offers a chargeable bulky waste collection service that will pick up the more awkward items of rubbish from your home and dispose of them in the correct way.

A limited number of subsidised bulky waste collections is available to help residents who may need assistance. Residents who are in receipt of benefits may be eligible to apply.  Before requesting a subsidised collection, please consider the other options listed above to re-use, recycle or dispose of your unwanted items.

Cost

The cost of the service depends on the size of the things that you want us to collect, with prices starting from £30 (VAT exempt) to dispose of approximately one cubic metre of rubbish.

Cancellation

If you cancel the booking you will receive a full refund, unless we have already attended to make the collection.  In this case, a minimum of £20 will be charged, to cover costs.

Booking a Bulky Waste Collection with an alternative waste collection company

Householders have a duty of care to ensure that their waste is disposed of legally and responsibly.  This means ensuring that anyone taking waste away from your home has waste carriers licence and inform you where or how they will be disposing of your waste.

Put simply this means that if you arrange for a ‘man and a van’ to come and clear out the contents of your old shed, or the waste produced by a kitchen fitter then go on to dispose of that rubbish illegally, flytipping for example, it is the householder who will be liable for the fine, this is currently up to £5000, unless you can show you took reasonable measures to check that household waste produced on your property is passed on to an authorised person.

To ensure that the person removing your waste is authorised contact the DEFRA website to check if they are a registered waste carrier.
