What Licences/Registrations do we Cover?

We deal with many different licensing/permits and registrations. Our colleagues in other departments also deal with some licensing functions.

If you want to come and visit us to talk about a specific matter, we are located on the ground floor of the Civic Offices next to the cashiers complex. Come in the main entrance and turn left. We are well signposted. To be safe, telephone first just in case the officer you want is out of the building. Appointments can be made at any time - first just give us a ring.

Please note that a dedicated officer is available each day at the reception area to deal with enquiries.

In addition, we are part of a Europe-wide scheme which aims to break down barriers to cross border trade in services between countries in the EU.

The EU Services Directive has been brought in to make it easier for service providers, particularly small and medium sized enterprises, to offer their services to customers in all EU countries, whether establishing elsewhere in the EU or providing services remotely from the UK.

Many of the licences we are responsible for fall under the directive, but not all.

Who Do We Report To?

We report to the City Solicitor. Our parent Committee is the Licensing Committee. Policy matters, important public issues, contested applications and disciplinary cases against licence holders are put before the Licensing Committee.

Generally speaking (and where the law permits) we can deal with licensing matters ourselves after consultation (if necessary) with the public, Ward Councillors and other professional council officers who advise us.
