How to register to vote

To register to vote you must complete an electoral registration form. Your name can then be added to the electoral register which is a list of everyone that is registered to vote.
The electoral register is published every year on the 1st December and is then updated each month until September. From late August, every address in Portsmouth is sent an annual voter registration form. Please go to Annual update of the electoral register for further details.
Who is eligible to register?
In order to register you must be 18 or over and be a British citizen, a British Commonwealth citizen, an Irish citizen or a European Union citizen (a citizen of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain or Sweden).

16 and 17 year olds can also be added to the register but are not able to vote until they are 18.
When will my name be added to the register?
When your application is received your name will be added to the register at the next update. The 2012 Register of Electors will be published on 1st December 2011 and the table below shows the monthly update schedule for 2012.
